Reflection on 2019 and Resolutions for Next Year

Reflection on 2019 and Resolutions for Next Year

With just about a week left in the year, I thought I’d reflect on 2019 and set some resolutions for the next year in a poetic way.

Reflection on This Year

For the past three years, both personally and professionally, I’ve been fortunate to have great opportunities and experiences. This year, in particular, was a really good one. Let me summarize it briefly in bullet points since writing it all out would be too tedious.

Public Side

I’d like to pick out specific events, but there are too many, so I’ll just summarize.

  • Experienced a lead engineer-like role.
    • To put it simply, I learned how important teamwork is and how much it impacts outcomes. I used to focus more on individual contributions, but now I’ve started thinking from a team perspective, which has broadened my view.
    • I still struggle with whether I’m just indulging in self-satisfaction, so I want to address that.
  • Gained experience.
    • I was in an environment where I could try things I hadn’t experienced technically, so I feel like I gained some experience in that sense. However, I think I leaned more towards defensive tasks rather than challenging ones. Next year, I want to reverse that ratio.
  • The company went public.
    • I’m glad I got to experience a phase that’s not easy to come by.
    • Beyond just the milestone of going public, the company is growing, and the organization is evolving flexibly. This seems to offer interesting opportunities for technical experiences as well.

Private Side

  • Completed all PHP conferences in Japan.
  • Did a lot of learning.
    • I decided to focus more on learning this year, so I spent a lot of time clearing my reading backlog, researching various topics, and writing blog posts here and there.
      • Since I’m naturally more output-oriented, I feel like I’ll shift back towards output next year.
  • Fully understood Golang.
    • I spent most of my private time writing Go, so I’ve gotten fairly comfortable with it.
    • I want to try a new language next year, but Go is fun, so I’ll keep writing it as well.
  • Got married.
    • A new chapter of life has begun.

Other technical details are quietly summarized in my daily outputs and resume, so I’ll skip the individual stories since they’re a hassle to write (though there’s probably more to say about those).

Resolutions for Next Year

I want to work towards creating a better tomorrow, both personally and professionally, so that next year can also be an upward trend.

As for my technical resolutions for next year, I think the phrase that fits best is:

“Breaking out of the humanities.”

Considering the areas I want to study next year, that seems to be the direction I’m heading in.

The end.
